Writing Prompt

Understanding the concern for preservation of Biodiversity, using your current knowledge of the effects of human activity, choose which region you prefer to live for the purpose of making a difference in the world and analyze the benefits and setbacks of your regional choice.

Here are your choices:

Urban Region (city life, downtown, neighboring cities, etc)

Tropical Island Region (brazil, hawaii, samoa, etc)

Urban:

BENEFITS

- Superior road ways (highways, etc)

- Technology (stores, media, etc)

SETBACKS

- Pollution (cars, factories)

- Overpopulation (too many people)

Tropical Island:

BENEFITS

- Clean Air, Nurture Biodiversity

- Vegetation (crops, energy, etc)

SETBACKS

- Little variety in technology (less innovative)

- Communication & Research is limited

Possible Outline Structure:

Introduction (stating your stance on biodiversity, mentioning your regional preference and a brief “why”)

Benefits (why your region works for you and preservation)

Setbacks (what makes it not good)

Conclusion (restate your position on biodiversity and why you prefer to live where you have chosen)

Chemical bond: force that holds two atoms together

Chemical formula: combination of chemical symbols and numbers that indicates which elements and how many atoms of each element are present in a molecule.

Compound: pure substance that contains two or more electrons.

Covalent electrons: chemical bond formed when atoms share electrons.

Electron cloud: are where negatively charged electrons arranged in energy levels that travel around an atom’s nucleus.

Electron dot diagram: chemical symbol for an element surrounded by as many dots as there are electrons in its outer shell.

Ion: atom that is no longer neutral because it has gained or lost electrons.

Ionic bond: attraction that holds oppositely charged ions close together.

Metallic bond: a bond that forms when electrons move freely among a metal’s positively charged ions.

Molecule: neutral particle formed when atoms share electrons.

Polar bond: bond resulting from the unequal sharing of electrons.
